Profile of a Servant Leader: Private First Class Leo G. Samborowski
In this month's profile of a servant leader, we honor the remarkable life of Leo G. Samborowski – an Army Ranger whose legacy resonates through generations. Leo is not only remembered as a courageous soldier but also as the uncle of Luke Leader's Executive Director, Len Samborowski, who bears his uncle's name with pride.
The story of Private First Class Leo G. Samborowski is an extraordinary example of selflessness in action. Recognized for his bravery during armed combat, Leo's journey is not just one of a soldier's courage, but also a testament to effective servant leadership. In 1998, he was inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame, an honor that underscores the depth of his commitment to his comrades and the principles he held dear.
Joining Company F of the 5th Ranger Battalion in September 1943, Leo embodied quiet strength and humility. His unassuming demeanor was a source of comfort for those around him, creating an atmosphere of trust and camaraderie. He was a soldier who embraced orders without complaint, a trait that earned him the respect and admiration of his fellow soldiers.
Courage Under Fire
In December 1944, Company F was tasked with the daunting mission of attacking the town of Lauterback, Germany. As they navigated through a wooded area to reach their objective, they encountered a barrage of enemy fire that tested their mettle. Leo, armed with a Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), found himself in the vanguard of the assault. With the objective just a hundred yards away, enemy fire erupted from well-concealed positions, creating a deadly crossfire.
Undeterred by the hail of bullets, Leo positioned himself strategically to engage two enemy machine guns. In a remarkable display of courage, he advanced through the onslaught, firing relentlessly and eliminating one of the opposing crews. His actions allowed fellow Rangers to flank the remaining machine gun, saving the lives of many of his comrades.
A Lasting Legacy of Service
Leo's bravery knew no bounds. As he pressed forward, he faced a barrage of over 100 bullets, sacrificing his life to protect his comrades and complete his mission. His unwavering commitment to duty and his fellow soldiers was recognized posthumously when he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his valor in battle.
Leo's legacy extends beyond his remarkable military achievements. His leadership style, rooted in humility and a deep sense of responsibility to those around him, exemplifies the essence of servant leadership. His actions on the battlefield were a reflection of his dedication to the well-being of his fellow soldiers and the ideals he held dear. Through his story, Leo G. Samborowski inspires us to lead with courage, selflessness, and an unwavering commitment to serving others.
